João Carlos Pacheco (*1988) is a Portuguese musician who uses drums, percussion and electronic means as a vehicle for the development of new creations in the area of contemporary music. His performing activity as a percussionist is extended by his work in the area of electroacoustic music, composition and collaboration in multidisciplinary projects.

He is most active in the field of chamber music, being a member of the Ensemble Inverspace, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble of Nomads, TAL Trio, Blechtrommel Duo and PaceD. Besides his work with these groups, he collaborates regularly as a freelancer with several ensembles in the European contemporary music circuit.

In his work in these projects he strives to create relationships of great complicity and creativity with composers, absorbing their ideas and providing tools for the realization of the artistic vision of the authors, thus leaving a strong mark on the works written for him.

His festival and concert series appearances have included Wien Modern, ECLAT (Stuttgart), Lucerne Festival, ULTIMA (Oslo), Gogol Festival (Kiev), ManiFeste IRCAM (Paris), reMusik (St. Petersburg), Festival Neue Musik Rümlingen, Musica(e) (Gradignan), Transit Festival (Leuven), TAKTLOS (Zürich), Tage für neue Musik (Zürich), Sommer in Stuttgart, Klang Basel, Cistermúsica, Festival Próximo Futuro FCG, Dias de Música Electroacústica (Seia), Dias da Música CCB (Lisbon), Xenakis/Karkowski Extended (Warsawa), among others. Besides these he has done residencies at New York University, Durham University, and University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

As a proponent of multidisciplinary work he has collaborated in creations produced by Lucerne Festival, Staatsoper Hamburg, Beyerisches Staatsoper, Theater Basel, Luzerner Theater, Wien Modern and Zeiträume Biennal.

João Carlos Pacheco studied in Espinho, Porto, Lisbon, and Basel, working with percussionists such as Pedro Carneiro, Miquel Bernat, and Christian Dierstein. At the Elektronisches Studio Basel he studied electroacoustic and composition with Erik Oña and Volker Böhm.

Since 2023 he is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Applied Arts in Lucerne, Switzerland and he is working as an Assistant Teacher for the percussion class of the Hochschule für Musik Basel.
